Default comp freezes while farming

When i am a 105 monk and dual farming with a famine in Foundry my comp always freezes in the first room. when i say freeze my comp locks up, the mouse doesn't move. then a few moments later i come back in dead.

this happens speratically when playing but never in the same place repeatedly.
Ive farmed the UW with 55/ss and never had this problem.

ive run virus, adware, spyware scans.. followed diferent posts on increases speed, but nothing has worked..

was wondering if anyone had any ideas how to fix this?

Do you run any background programs while doing this? Vent or TS? Depending on your computer, it might be slowing down trying to do to much as you play and that could cause you to lag.

i tried turning off all the programs in the background. (xfire, gtalk, etc).
that didnt seem to work, i also brought all the game settings down, didnt work either.

i tried to zoom in to first person and look at the floor, that actually worked but i couldnt select anything nor see what was happening.

If I remember correctly, a Guildie of mine had the same sort of problem. The solution (for him) was to increase his system RAM. How much RAM do you have?

I have 768 mg of ram devided into a 512 simm and a 256 simm.
the two weren't designed to go together so maybe thats the problem.
i tried a memory stess test and it came out without any errors.

From my experience with strange system "hickups" with online programs, three common occurances come to mind.

___
A) You are on a network, with Windows (any version) and another computer with Windows XP Pro / or / NT. Almost all cases of this, one or more (it does not have to be all systems) systems on the network have file sharing on. This only seems to occur when one system attempts (automatically) to become a superior of the two or more systems, trying to maintain ethernet broadcasts and act as a gateway to the net, and the system routenly sends brodcasts over the network to maintain a relationship. This is a known problem with using multiple systems on a network, and each person has a different answer to solving it. If you think that this is the case, Microsoft has a few answers on their website, and if you just want a temporary fix until you can sit down and hammer it out, just diable file sharing on all your systems (if you are networked) and reset the router if you have one.

If A does not apply, the next two may.

___
B) System RAM could be a problem, as could hard drive difficultys. To do a somewhat scientific approach, start with the hard drive. Make sure that your total system free memory is at least 20% of the maximum, defrag the system (as the final action of your hard drive tests, since it takes a while if you havent done it in some time), and remove any TSRs (terminate and stay resident) programs that you may see using Ctrl+Alt+Delete to pull up a list. Do not remove anything using the user name "SYSTEM" or anything that says "LOGINNAME", where LOGINNAME is the name you use to log in to windows. Start with all the other programs on that list, and remove them one by one, test, and see if your problem is solved.

Ba)
We will get to the RAM in a second, but another useful tool is to open your "RUN" icon in your start menu, and type in and execute the command "MSConfig". If you have tried the first paragraphs steps above, with the MSConfig program open, click the option "Diagnostic Startup", hit OK, and restart and test again. If that did not fix it, go back to "Normal Startup", hit OK, and restart again, and continue to the next paragraph that refers to MSConfig.

Click on the tab labeled "Startup". Review the list, and verify that you know the items on the list. Almost all of them should be programs that you have installed at one time or another. Scroll to the bottom of the list, and start observing the names and locations. Others may not have a name, or may have a name in a language that does not make sense in English, or has a name in the "Startup Item" list that does not make rational sense to what it does. You are looking for anything that does not belong, and using the interweb, typing the name of the Startup Item in Google should pull up a few websites that explain what the files do, and if they are necessary to the system. Feel free to Check and Uncheck the items at the BOTTOM of the list that you are viewing, one or a few at a time, test Guild Wars, and see if it works. If not, or if you have a question about one in particular, post and we will try to help you out.

Bb) RAM is a bit easier to test, but it is not normally such a problem that it only occurs in one particular program, unless your system is extremely new, and the program in quesition is not updated often or within the last 2 years (which obviously isnt the case here). However, it is not outside the relm of possibilty.

The test here is simple, remove one, test, if it doesnt work, turn off the system, remove the other, replace the first one, test again.

Remember to not wear socks while exchanging electronics, and keep in contact with some part of metal on the system at all times (if you have an electrostatic wrist strap, be sure to use it).

____
C) Something interfering with your connection.

While the concept is simple, finding the cause can be difficult sometimes. If you have a router, disconnect it if you can, and plug right into the wall. If it still occurs, execute the game, mouse over the green/yellow/red light that shows your ping speed while in the zone. Write down the IP Address that is shown there. Then keep the wall/computer direct connection, and use the command "CMD" (click the "Run" icon on your start menu again, and type that in and hit enter), and then type 'Tracert XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX', where XXX. .. ... is the IP Address that you wrote down. If the previous bullet points have not solved the problem, post us your Tracert information, and we can try to identify if that is the cause.

PHEW! Ok, I need to copy this and save this I wrote all that by hand, and now it is time to go play "rub the muscle relaxer on the carpals".

Hope that helps a bit.

I hope not, if it is starting to have problems, then failure is not too far off I would think from experience.

Heat can seriously rob life expectancy, you might want to check for a new one while you still can!

I also have had the freezing problem for a while now, but it carries a few other characteristics with it...after it freezes the screen goes blank i.e. black for about 10-16 seconds and then once it gets back to normal i have to reset the screen because it's no longer in "the middle" of the monitor. If I happen to have GW window maxmized the desktop resolution gets changed to match the one from GWs (I use lower resolution on GWs).
Also, i've noticed that such freezes have a high chance to occur in fow, uw, ha and gvg (i.e. any 8vs8 arena with higher graphics "demands"), but lower one to happen in TA or RA.
I think it might be my graphics card's fault, but am not sure. I've always been running radeon 9100 series and the problem arose after I've started playing pvp more actively...which would be about a year ago :S.

I set the card back to its normal settings and it seems tobe ok, although i havnt tried in foundry yet. I would buy another graphics card but my motherboard only handles Pci (did not forget to add e), and i only want to buy another one if my current goes out. Anyone know of any stress tests for graphics cards to see if theres any errors?

Ps: my card is a NVIDIA Geforce Fx 5200 Pci w/ 256mg ram

Hey guys, sorry I have been away for a while and unable to respond due to me not feeling so well.

--

Urania, if you could list your specs before this thread closes, that may shed some light on what is going on.

Also, if you are overclocking, like Liger13 was, that would be helpful to know too.

--

Liger13, that is great that you got it going well again. You may have had a fan go bad on your video card, or somewhere in your case, and you may want to look into replacing the ones that did, if they did

I found a free executable on the web that does Video Card stress testing, but before you click it and download

PLEASE - PLEASE - PLEASE VIRUS SCAN AND SPYWARE CHECK THE EXE FIRST!

http://freestone-group.com/video-car...ility-test.htm

PLEASE - PLEASE - PLEASE VIRUS SCAN AND SPYWARE CHECK THE EXE FIRST!

I have not tested it, and I do not know if it contains anything bad, but I was refered by another testing website I use. If you find no problems, please post and relate to us that it was problem free, and how well it worked.

Id like to hand this program out to a few other users I know if this is a good one.

almost forgot about this thread :S...anyway, my computer's specs are:
2. 41 GHz, 512 MB of RAM, winxp 2
graphics card is radeon 9100 series.

It's most likely my graphics card fault for the freezes I get :| It usually happens in graphically more demanding areas like UW, fow, the coral maps in TA and RA and practically in any 8vs8 arena.

But i've been having another problem since the weapon sound update...usually at start of the 1st matches in any pve or pvp arena i have extremely low fps which results in an echoing sound and slow motion - I have put the graphics quality on fastest and that solved the issue with the low fps to a certain degree, but the issue reemerged lately for some reason =/.
